A thoroughly intriguing piece, Brick follows high school loner Brendan on an amateur detective mission to save his ex-girlfriend from an unknown danger. Through a combination of intelligence, stealth and sheer brute force, Brendan makes many an important discovery. Brick is not your average high school movie, nor is it a run-of-the-mill crime drama, though it combines both genres relatively successfully, transplanting the traditional film noir into an unfamiliar setting. A strong acting performance from Gordon-Levitt in the lead role adds intensity and plausibility to affairs and the cinematography is typical of the genre. This is a solidly respectable effort at being that bit different.
