At first glance, Middle School is another straightforward family-friendly teen movie with little to offer a more mature audience. Homework, state tests and teenage crushes all feature here. Beneath the surface, however, is a story of love, loss, hope and ambition. It is certainly far better than it could have been, offering emotional twists and turns throughout. Griffin Gluck brings warmth to the role of the teenage protagonist and his likeability is key to the film's success. The addition of some smart animation also helps Middle School to stand above its peers. Well worth a watch.
